Reduce Bills
Nottingham Trent University have looked into the thermal insulation of green roofs - comparing a green roof to a standard roof. In summer time, when the mean temperature above the roof was 18.4 degrees, it was 34 degrees under the membrane of the standard roof but only 17.1 degrees under the membrane of the green roof.
Conversely in winter, when the temperature above the roof was zero, beneath the membrane of the standard roof it was 0.2 degrees (these were experimental roofs, not heated buildings), beneath the membrane of the green roof, the temperature was 4.7 degrees. In either scenario, this could represent a considerable saving in heating/air conditioning bills and in an unheated building, such as a stable, dog kennel, summerhouse etc it can make the building a lot more comfortable
Reduce Maintenance Costs
We're still learning about how much a green roof can extend the life of the waterproofing. The green roof build up protects against UV light and evens out temperature fluctuations (veering between high and low temperatures can cause the waterproofing to crack and degenerate) - so far, we're sure the lifespan can be doubled but it could be that the life of the waterproofing can be trebled...not only does this make a HUGE difference to the cost of building maintenance, it also reduces the amount of building materials that are sent to landfill
Sound Proofing
Sound proofing is another important benefit of green roofing. A 7cm deep sedum roof build up can halve the amount of noise heard inside a building - very useful if you live under a flight path, or if you want a really peaceful garden office
